Notes

The british “Pacer” was a project to build cheap DMUs by using mainly bus components on a cheap two-axle chassis. Whether this was a success or not is still unclear, twenty years later. They are cheap, which was the goal, but offer a very rough ride for the passengers. No new ones have been built since the eighties. An interesting aside is that even the cheapest british DMUs have high-level entries, while most other nations favor low-level entries for infrequently travelled lines, because that way it is not necessary to have a high platform.

Train 140 001, which is the only of the 140 class, was the prototype for the entire category. At the moment it’s sitting at the endpoint of the Keith and Dufftown railway in Scotland, waiting for better days to come. For the time being, I guess it isn’t going anywhere.

Taken July 2007.
